memory and time

In film, I feel..., I See..., visual+sound on October 20, 2008 at 12:27 am

17:34 20th Oct, 08 You are back to a place where you used to live. It’s autumn, leaves fall, sun goes down around 6pm. You passed by a cafe where you spent a lot of good time with your friends, your 23rd birthday, you sat at the table right beside the door. Around the corner, there is the book store, oh my god! it’s still here, remember  you met your ex- girl friend there for the first time. Then you two talked and talked non stop. You shared your photo gallery with her, and she asked so many questions…

How do you feel now? a bit sour?

Last week I was invited to the Lucca Film Festival, yes, it’s one of those… around sept/oct it’s full of film festivals around the world. The first night I saw “Birth of a Nation” of Jonas Mekas. There were many old images of every small details of daily life. They are not necessary sorrow, they are just some drops of old memory. I felt disturbbing, it was not even my old meomery. But why do I feel this way?

“One hundred and sixty portraits or rather appearances, sketches and glimpses of avant-garde, independent filmmakers and film activists between 1955 and 1996. WhyBirth Of A Nation? Because the film independents IS a nation in itself. We are surrounded by commercial cinema Nations, the same way as the indigenous people of the United States or of any other country are surrounded by the Ruling Powers. We are the invisible, but essential nation of cinema. We are the cinema.” -Jonas Mekas

The film remind me of a trip of visual + sound experience at BFI for its 75th birthday. It was a bit tripping, exploring the themes of memory and time.
